Nthabiseng Mosia: The Customer-Discovery Lesson Behind Easy Solar

A researched founder profile separates a documented early field investigation from the broader lessons entrepreneurs can draw about testing a business idea.

Nthabiseng Mosia is a co-founder of Easy Solar, the West African energy business. Her early entrepreneurial work offers a practical subject for founders: how to investigate a large social problem at household level before designing a commercial response.

Columbia SIPA's retrospective, posted on 13 October 2022, describes Mosia developing an energy-access business plan with classmates Eric Silverman and Alexandre Tourre. It reports field investigation in Sierra Leone in December 2015 and a competition prize in April 2016. These are historical milestones, not newly announced developments.

From a broad need to a specific decision

“Energy access” is a large market description. A household makes a narrower decision: what appliance it can use, what payment it can sustain and who will help if equipment fails. ITBank's interpretation is that those practical decisions deserve investigation before choosing a product bundle.

A founder working in another sector can borrow the method without claiming that the same business model will transfer. Start with an observation, write the assumption it challenges, then design a small test. Keep separate records for what a potential customer said, what they actually did and what the founder inferred.

Why financing changes the service promise

Easy Solar's own website describes flexible financing and a network of agents and shops. This makes after-sales contact, clear payment terms and local accessibility relevant questions alongside the equipment itself.

A founder applying that principle should budget for support and failed transactions, not only acquisition. A small pilot should reveal whether customers understand the full obligation and whether staff can resolve a problem consistently. These are proposed business questions, not findings from an ITBank evaluation of Easy Solar.

Respect the limits of a founder story

An award or university account can document part of a journey without establishing current commercial performance. The 2022 retrospective should not be used to assert today's staffing, revenue or customer numbers. This profile therefore avoids carrying historical scale claims forward as present facts.

Mosia's example is useful because it directs attention to investigation before expansion. It does not prove that passion removes financing risk or that every venture addressing a real need will succeed.

This is an independently prepared researched profile, not a submission by Mosia, an authorised biography or an ITBank interview. Current executive responsibilities and company performance require direct confirmation.
