Learn what AI tools are good at—and where they fail

Generative AI can help draft a first version of an email, organise meeting notes or suggest alternative explanations for a concept. It can also invent sources, misunderstand context and produce confident mistakes. Workplace competence means knowing both capabilities and limits.

Start with low-risk tasks

Try improving the structure of a non-confidential memo, converting your own notes into action items or brainstorming questions for a training session. Compare the result against the original material and edit it for tone and factual accuracy. Do not upload customer records, unpublished financial data or employment documents into an unapproved tool.

Check every consequential claim

If an answer contains a date, statistic, legal rule, product specification or attributed quotation, locate a trustworthy source. A plausible citation generated by an AI system is not proof that the source exists. For decisions involving money, health or employment, maintain appropriate human professional oversight.

Make your process explainable

Keep track of the source material, what the tool contributed, what you changed and who approved the final result. Employers may have their own rules about disclosing AI assistance and processing personal information. Follow those controls rather than assuming public availability means unrestricted use.

Measure whether it helps

Time the complete task, including correction and checking. If a ten-second draft requires an hour of repair, it did not improve productivity. Build judgement about when to use AI and when to work directly.

Strengthen human skills alongside AI

Subject knowledge, clear writing, ethical reasoning and the ability to question a result remain valuable. AI literacy should expand professional capability, not hide gaps in understanding.
