What support experience already teaches you
People working in IT support already understand tickets, troubleshooting, user expectations and the cost of downtime. Cloud operations builds on those habits, but adds identity management, infrastructure configuration, monitoring and automation. The transition should focus on demonstrable competence rather than collecting expensive certificates.
Weeks 1–4: learn the foundation
Use a local virtual machine or a low-cost learning sandbox to explore operating systems, command lines, basic scripting, DNS, IP addressing and authentication. Draw a diagram of how a request reaches a web service. Document what happens when the service is unavailable. Do not practise on an employer's production systems without permission.
Weeks 5–8: build one safe cloud exercise
Choose a single provider's beginner learning path. Configure a small storage or static-site exercise with minimum required permissions. Turn on billing alerts and delete unused resources after practising. Record every step, including the mistake you made and how you corrected it. Cloud skills include preventing surprises on the invoice.
Weeks 9–12: demonstrate operations
Add monitoring, a basic backup-and-restore exercise and an incident checklist. Write a short runbook showing how someone else can detect a problem and recover. Your portfolio should show security decisions and costs, not merely screenshots of a successful deployment.
How to pursue roles
Look for junior operations, technical support engineering and cloud support roles matching your actual experience. Explain which responsibilities you already performed and which you practised independently. Twelve weeks can produce a credible foundation, but it cannot guarantee employment or substitute for experience under real production pressure.
Action: Publish a sanitised runbook and cost-conscious architecture diagram that a reviewer can understand in five minutes.
