BYD Introduces ATTO 8 Electric SUV in Paris With Claims of Nine-Minute Charging

BYD unveiled its seven-seat ATTO 8 at the 2026 Paris Motor Show, promising a fast-charging system and up to 653 km WLTP range as the model targets European markets in 2027.

Chinese electric-vehicle manufacturer BYD has introduced the ATTO 8, a seven-seat flagship SUV for European markets, at the Paris Motor Show.

In its October 12, 2026 announcement, BYD described the vehicle as the first in its European line-up to offer its FLASH Charging technology. The company claims a charge from 10% to 97% in as little as nine minutes under the relevant charging conditions.

That is a manufacturer-reported capability, not a result independently established by ITBank in public charging networks.

What BYD has announced

The ATTO 8 features a 115 kWh second-generation Blade Battery. BYD advertises up to 653 kilometres of driving range under the WLTP combined testing cycle, depending on the vehicle configuration.

The company says the new SUV will arrive in European markets during the first quarter of 2027, with rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive options. At launch, the vehicle is aimed at the upper end of the company's range.

The official announcement also showcased the SHARK DMO pickup, which BYD said was due to reach markets across Europe in the following six months.

Why charging claims require context

A nine-minute recharge changes the conversation about EV convenience, but several conditions need to align. Charging hardware must support the required power, the vehicle must have an appropriate battery state and operating temperature, and the station must be available and functioning.

A charging specification says little about how many compatible public chargers will exist in a particular city next year. It also does not establish the price per unit of energy or whether repeated rapid charging has any long-term impact on the battery under local conditions.

A buyer should compare real-world charging access, warranty terms and independently measured efficiency—not just one headline time.

Understanding the range figure

WLTP is a standardised test method used to compare vehicle energy consumption and range. Actual range will differ with driving speed, weather, passenger load, road conditions and climate-control use.

That distinction is important for large SUVs, which may be used for long family journeys and operate far from major charging infrastructure.

What the development means beyond Europe

BYD is demonstrating how Chinese EV companies are competing through battery and charging systems as well as pricing and vehicle design.

For African markets, the central question is not whether the ATTO 8 will automatically arrive locally. No Africa-wide availability is established by this Paris announcement. Rather, faster-charging technology could influence future infrastructure decisions, import choices and consumer expectations.

Power-grid capacity, station reliability, access to vehicle service and the total cost of ownership remain crucial in countries considering wider EV adoption.
